An Eye for Detail Splitting Hairs Good Chemistry Hold Still Skintimate Knowledge A Plague of Knowledge. What happens when a magic-based skeleton and a science-based human start examining their biology?

This, apparently. Largely just a collection of various horrified reactions to human physiology, with some sprinklings of monster physiology.

See the end of the chapter for notes. It was written a long time ago, and yet still remains largely accurate. I have this book because anatomy and physiology are fascinating. Especially since humans are basically just an amalgamation of software bugs that somehow all manage to work together to make a functional organism. He spoke with a mixture of reverence and cynicism. He seemed to view the body as some sort of science experiment gone wrong; a volatile marriage of form-function and blind luck.

He began pacing as he continued, "It's so…. One misplaced base pair, one altered amino acid and BAM , suddenly your blood cells are all weirdly bent instead of being the nice, round, flat, donut-shaped things. And yet, we have mechanisms to keep the insides at just the right temperature and pH for literally decades. What a fucking mess! The look on the skeleton's face was enough to quiet him for the moment. Papyrus seemed concerned that he might burst into flames or something.

He blanched, chuckling nervously. My degree is just a four-year one, and it's rather broad. I can explain the basics to you, but if you want to know more than that, I'd suggest auditing an actual college course.

Papyrus maintained his serious expression, and decided to take the human up on his offer immediately, approaching him and leaning down to bring himself more or less to his eye level. The human sighed in relief. Good, I was afraid he was going to ask about something difficult like reproduction or mental illness…. Inside our throat, we have these flaps of tissue that we can vibrate at different frequencies to produce sound.

We get our unique vocal sound from the size and shape of our throat and the sinuses in our skulls. And we turn that sound into actual words by changing the configuration of our tongue, lips, and teeth. It was the human's turn to be confused. He was fascinated by monsters, particularly the skeleton brothers. However, he also found them frustrating; it seemed most of their physiology was attributed to just "magic". The human suddenly seemed a bit bashful. He was still getting the hang of praise and recognition for things beyond his usefulness.

I just don't see the attraction to the low pitched-rumbly voices those other guys have. It's like they're constantly talking from their diaphragm how is that even comfortable? He shook his head and sighed, "I'm getting off topic…the point is, we have actual physical structures that allow us to move and behave as we do. Everything in the body has a function, although some of them are poorly understood.

He somehow managed to look both sympathetic to his confusion and offended by his statement, "When you're as complicated a creature as a human… if our brains were so simple we could understand them, we would be so simple we couldn't. There's too many intricate, molecular-level functions to our metabolism to ever hope to understand them all.

Even human doctors don't understand everything about the entire body, they just usually specialize into a narrow field. That's why we have so many different types of doctors.

Some just treat the skin, some just treat the brain, some can perform any basic surgery, others can only perform a few specific surgeries geared towards a particular organ or organ system. We are too complex for any one of us to fully understand how we work or what makes us tick. It is both fascinating and infuriating. Papyrus considered this for a moment, then decided it was probably best to get back to their original topic; he could get a little feisty when pushed to answer things he didn't know or didn't want to discuss.

Especially in English. It's three languages in a trench coat, what did you expect? But yes, an endoscope. It's a tool used in medicine. Picture a camera on a long, flexible hose. And they just sorta…stick it inside whatever orifice to get a look around. The two of them collectively shuddered at the thought. Papyrus didn't even have internal organs to go digging around in, and he decided he was rather grateful for this fact.

Human medicine was horrific. He pointed at the front of his neck, guiding his hand into the correct position. Papyrus was shocked when he began speaking…and he could actually feel the vibrations in his throat. So many humans don't realize the neat little changes that happen in the neck when they speak.

It was an interesting experience, to be sure. He could feel the difference between the higher and lower pitches in his words. His windpipe actually shifted up and down as he spoke.

He idly wondered if his own neck did the same thing. He actually laughed at this statement, startling Papyrus further with the movement. He hadn't expected the vibrations to start and stop so suddenly. Telling Stretch to do what he wanted with his own life, screw whatever his dad thought.

Stretch was silent as Alibi stamped out his own cigarette, stalked off like usual, and Alibi remembered that silence nearly choking him.

Alibi saw Stretch smoking less often after that exchange, yet still sees Stretch in class. Alibi pays him little mind in class, choosing to focus on his studies, to truly work on acclimating to human societal standards. Alibi stared at the chalkboard behind his homeroom teacher as she filled the students in.

Stretch takes a shine to him almost immediately, and they quickly learn his nickname among the mixed timelines.

It seemed that not only did they share similar timelines, they shared a similar background in work. Both from the Royal Guard, both ex-Captains, and both toting an amount of LV that made other softer monsters incredibly nervous. Glancing at one another and understanding seemed almost second nature, and soon the three were pretty close in general.

Sometimes it felt like he was talking to himself, and it was very easy to forget that Edge was a year younger than him and Stretch. They fall silent as Stretch calls for them both, approaching them quickly. Alibi found it vaguely disheartening to see them together like that, but he lets it run over his back. Ever since Edge started coming to class, Stretch rarely appears at the smoking spot anymore.

At least, not when Alibi regularly goes there. When he is there, his thoughts are clouded with Edge, their newfound friend. More often than ever, asking thoughtful questions rather than just staring into space. She laughs and agrees. Something deep churns in him, wondering why he never heard Stretch laugh like that around him before Edge. Yet, it never felt right to sit next to them. Alibi was right, Stretch cried to him exuberantly. He had decided on chasing his dream to become an actor, just like Alibi said he should.

Stretch convinced his dad, somehow. Chattering about his choice of school in-state, about how Edge might feel about it, Alibi feels a distant ache in his chest listening to it all, but keeps it to himself while his mouth exchanges a solid congratulations; an added assurance that Alibi knew he could do it.

Later the same day, sitting together in class during work time, Edge shares his decision on his choice of college to continue his producing career. Edge comments that they may end up working together to achieve their goals, and Stretch beams brightly. Full PDF Book. You can click on download link below!!!
